ASTI members have voted for industrial action, up to and including strike action, over a range of issues concerning Covid-19 in schools

In a ballot that posed a number of questions, ASTI teachers voted in favour of action on a number of issues.

The ballot stipulated that such action should be taken in conjunction with at least one other teachers' union.— ASTI October 28, 2020Commenting on the outcome, ASTI President Ann Piggott said members were clearly stating that they want schools to remain open for students. "Teachers are unwavering in their commitment to providing a quality education and to supporting their students at this stressful and uncertain time," Ms Piggott said.

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Kieran Christie said "there will be no kneejerk reactions" and their Executive will be meeting in the next couple of days and will consider all aspects of these matters.

As a union they were never very smart politically, wrong move, wrong time

Safety rules in schools are not suspended. That’s rubbish. Protocols are in place and working in the schools I have direct involvement with. Transmission levels amongst school children are lower than average population. Get on with it like the rest of us.

Can an ASTI member post what is being suggested with regard to 'They included seeking a redefinition of what constitutes a close contact in the classroom'

Why was there no mention on the 9 o'clock news that the astiunion's demands included a pay increase? Are doing PR for astiunion now?

ASTI - This is the future of our kids you are dealing with - please tread very very carefully or Your usual well of support will be bone dry

'Schools are not high-risk environments'- CMO Dr Tony Holohan says there's no reason schools shouldn't re-open next week

2022 before a hopefully successful vaccine is available widely in the Europe. What’s the plan until then? Homeschooling. There is no workplace that doesn’t carry risk at the moment.teachers have you sensed the huge lack of public support.time to get real!

🙄

100 percent in support of teachers- a safe environment and equal pay are hardly outrageous requests! And nowhere has it been said that teachers want schools closed🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately misguided decision to conflate genuine concerns re: COVID an attempt to exploit a pandemic to push for a pay rise. Will simply play to teacher bashing narrative of Niall Boylan / Ciara Kelly. Smacks of opportunism. Always about €€ with the ASTI. Even in a crisis

'We want more protection during a pandemic!'. Yeah, cool, that's reasonable, you shouldn't even have to ask. 'And a free laptop and a GI Joe ultimate fortress and a pay rise too kthxbye'

This isn't about C19 or the students It's about the equal pay after 2010, which was suggested by the teachers during the recession because they would not take the cut at the time The rest is an excuse. Asti TeachersStrike

Working from home is a myth for teachers, they deal with children not adults

“ what’s our reason for a strike this time ?” — “ it’s pay... oh ..and COVID”

Scrolled down through the comments and can't find a single one shaming teachers while actually referring to any of the points the ASTI are raising! Slamming the teachers without actually disagreeing with any of their demands! Blind negativity can't be healthy

The amount of misspellings in the teacher bashing today is triggering. If I wasn't so work shy I'd consider correcting them

Surprise surprise 🤷‍♀️

Curriculums not finished for exam year students and the teachers response is to go on strike. What an absolute disgrace the ASTI are. Please please for the sake of 2020/21 exam year, please dont do this. Its morally wrong. There are thousands of people in our country with no job!

Same rules as everyone else .. you don't work €350 a week and it's means tested !!

The poor teachers. It's like they didn't know they were signing up to teach 30 pupils Ina class. Last thing we need ffs

Brilliant they want equal pay with the teachers hired after 2010. Such a nice gesture to voluntarily bring their salaries DOWN to the 2010 entrants lvl. Problem solved and billions saved.

About time!

For anyone who wants to teacher bash and can't be bothered looking up what we actually want in schools. All about protecting the students and keeping schools open. Read before you decide to type absolute nonsense!

I cannot get over the selfishness of the ASTI. When are they going to realise that they are essential service providers and get on with it. Why do they hold themselves above all others? Walk a day in a nurses shoes. A supermarket workers shoes. Anyone! ClaireByrneLive

Ugh do I really want to scan down through these comments? Let me guess...stick ‘em on the PUP, what about retail workers, it’s only a flu’....work-shy is what they are!!

You don't see doctor's and nurses striking and they've to endure worse conditions than teachers! If teachers think it's OK to just walk out on their students at a time when their needed the most, then maybe they should consider a different career!

Oh... how fortunate that all the kids where instructed to take all of their books home with them for the mid term break. Amazing foresight. It’s almost like they expected it.

Give them masks, gowns, visors, gloves and let them teach away. This bullshit of teachers striking has to stop. Sick of them having so much power. We don't walk away, work from home or strike during a pandemic, yet teachers will be 'heros', From an angry critical care nurse 😠😠

Disgraceful move in the middle of a national emergency. They have badly misjudged the public mood with this one.

Childcare workers are facing the same issues with no ppe. Teachers don’t have to wipe noses or change nappies

Ok.... so they are getting paid.. guaranteed pensions... meanwhile, hundreds of thousands on Covid Payment.. Nurses in front line.. supermarket workers on low pay keeping shelves stocked... well done ASTI👏👏👏

Surprised it took this long

Gardai, doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers just get on with it but will someone not think of the poor teachers

Equal pay for teachers employed after 2010 is now a Covid 19 issue. All said.

In it together 👍👍👍👍

Complete and absolute Disgrace. Pure opportunism.

Seriously unimpressive performance by ASTI guy on drivetime

To quote their own statement “This smacks of crisis opportunism.”

How about thinking..... perhaps the threat of strike action will force the government to introduce safer conditions for our children.. think people!

Full support to them. There's no PPE, no ventilation in schools. It's why we VHR families had to keep our kids at home, no provision for their education

Close the schools if they are concerned. Put all teachers on PUP payments until its rectified by all parties.

This will go down like a lead balloon........ can't wait to see the backlash this will get!

“Put them on 350”. Why should we be put on covid when we’d be working from home just as others are? Typical discrimination against teachers. Don’t want us to close but it seems that’s the way it’s been going since midterm started.

Maybe our so called 'Journalists' will now sit up and ask themselves why Teachers are taking this action. CHALLENGE the flawed evidence Dr Burns, the Government & NPHET is feeding you !

Part 3 of my drip-feed future gov policy news stories

You don't see the construction sector going on strike. Why hasn't there been any coverage of lads in close contact with each other on sites probably more so than schools? Would it be if the construction stopped the country would be proper fuck so just get on with it?

Absolutely ridiculous! It is undeniable from the data (get the STEM teachers to parse it out 😠) if you are under 66, ie: of employment age, you have a 99.9% chance of recovering fully from COVID-19 If you are too sick with comorbidities then go home, young teachers need jobs!

Let them strike bring in Sub teachers to replace

The less people do, the less they want to do.

Teachers are proving their narcissism once again. Only interested in themselves.

Wrong timing and wrong decision by the Asti

Good job they don’t work in hospitals or nursing homes.

Teachers received six months full pay earlier in the year while the schools were closed. Now after a week off they want to strike. Let them strike. The world will keep on turning.

Put them on the 350 pup, it's only fair, everyone else wants to work but are prevented from doing so, and some of these don't want to work.

No surprise there really..

Good for them! 👏👏👏

Leaving all the kids who can’t participate in online/blended learning to flounder. But what’s new 🤷🏻‍♀️

We might as well close shops, hospitals and all other locations where human interaction occurs as well so. Christ sake get on with it and do yere jobs.

Well done astiunion

While the rest of the country is desperate to get back to work, these ppl wanna strike🤦🏼‍♂️

Close school and put them all on COVID payment like everyone else

Love the way the teachers are voting to strike but the rest of us who deal with hundreds in a day and have no clue who they are are just meant to get on with it 🙄

William38420224 dirtydiogo lukekellyO3 there’s hope lads

Wonder if Coppinger is embedded in there somewhere.

Well done to them. CLOSE THE SCHOOLS!

Covid-19: Hospitalisations continue to rise as positivity rate remains steadyTen more people have been hospitalised with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. But Leo says everything is fine! Who’s lying? Leo or absolutely everyone else? Confusing times indeed 🤷‍♂️😂 *Or you are just testing more and finding 'new' infections. This is a farce What awful reporting! Positivity rate is 'steady' because testing numbers are not added on Sundays or B/H Monday to the data hub. Discharges from hospital also possibly and admin hangover from the Bank holiday and may not be 100% accurate

HSE pledges 800 contract tracers to deal with Covid-19The Health Service Executive has promised that in eight weeks' time it will have 800 contact tracers recruited to deal with Covid-19. Only 7 months since the viral pandemic struck Ireland and we are already starting to recruit full time and dedicated contact tracers! We may have a fully functioning trace function by next year. Wasting more money on this charade. When will people wake up to this BS. Sad but true this country is no longer free. Michael Collins is turning in his grave. Why not use the teachers on full pay who are too nervous to go to work?

NI hospitals under pressure as Covid-19 cases riseA health official in Northern Ireland has said the pressure on hospitals is building, as the Antrim Area Hospital warned it is operating beyond capacity. Covid cases in Northern Ireland are not actually rising...... Stop your relentless propoganda of fear mongering & manipulation. You ignore science, common sense and proportionality. You are complicit in perpetrating crimes against humanity and I hope that you will be brought to account and dissolved. You bring shame on yourselves Well it's the government's fault for not expanding hospitals with new wings and extra beds. That should have been their main priority. Another screw up by them.
