Ireland Headlines News

Julian Assange has lodged an appeal against a decision to extradite him from the UK to the United States, as supporters staged protests ahead of his 51st birthday.

His wife Stella was among people who gathered outside Britain's Home Office in central London today to step up calls for the WikiLeaks founder to be released from prison.

He will spend his birthday in Belmarsh Prison in London tomorrow while a lengthy legal battle continues over whether he can be extradited. UK Home Secretary Priti Patel approved the extradition to the US last month, but an appeal application was submitted to the London High Court today. Mr Assange is wanted by American authorities over documents leaked in 2010 and 2011 related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

He has been in prison since he was dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2019, where he had been living since 2012.

Johnson accused of 'vandalising' UK, Ireland trustJonathan Powell, former Downing Street chief of staff and architect of the Good Friday Agreement has accused the British government of destroying its trust with the Irish government over the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Tory ERG have a lot to answer for here. I get the sense that Ireland wants to use the NorthernIrelandProtocol to create divisions between Northern Ireland unionists and Britain and, in turn, tip the political balance towards Irish reunification. That's why Ireland is so mad at the NIP bill. It restores NI/UK unity.

Relations with UK have never been as bad - VaradkarLeo Varadkar said the UK's bid to unilaterally change the protocol was a 'strategic mistake' and that the EU would 'not be threatened' by the UK's approach to the ongoing stand-off. Eh I’d say when they were committing mass genocide on our lands the relations were slightly worse All European, from a man whose Govt was even consulted by the EU when they were considering Article 16...during pandemic, over vaccine orders!!! Really thinks, he’s a ‘big cheese’ 🧀🙄 Why do so many lies go unchallenged? The protocol is not at odds with GFA, Brexit is. The GFA states that there could be no change to the status of NI without the consent of the majority. Brexit removed NI from the EU against the expressed wishes of the majority. A clear majority
