Ask Jennifer: Should I stop daughter's boyfriend coming over

My daughter has always been a rebellious, argumentative teenager, and some of the boyfriend and friend choices she’s made over the years have given us many sleepless nights.

My husband says he’s just like many other teenagers these days, but I just find it rude. He avoids eye-contact and something about him is making me more and more uneasy. Your daughter clearly has feelings for him and seems happier than she’s been for some time. Why would you want to spoil that? You’ve already seen how she reacted to your negative comments about him. And if you continue to voice these, you risk damaging your relationship with her still further.

All or none of these may be true, but one thing is certain, things won’t improve unless you can make him feel more welcome. Rather than grill him about his intentions when he next visits, try to show him some warmth and friendliness; a smile goes a long way. We’ve talked about what’s happening in our sex life, but he says it’s just that he is getting old. I am worried that out marriage is falling apart, and I don’t know what to do about it. Part of me wants to leave him and look for someone younger to love. But then I worry about what this will do to the children.

This leaves the possibility that he is finding satisfaction through the internet. Internet porn and chat-rooms are places where people can escape the responsibility of real world interactions for a while. My partner says I should learn to be content with what I’ve got, but I can’t. This probably seems like such a trivial thing to worry about, especially with all the horrible stuff happening to people around the world in places like the Ukraine and Gaza.
