Murder er Jozef Puska sat in the court with a cocky smirk on his face throughout his entire trial - even amid the most gruesome evidence.
It was in this poorly crafted fairy tale that he apparently was now the victim and the sole witness to the brutal murder of Ashling Murphy - yet he did nothing to inform the authorities. Not only that, he then expected the jury to believe that he bravely got up, wounded from three stab wounds, put a scarf around Ashling Murphy, knew she was dying, but then ran into the fields, passed out in a ditch - and when he woke up, ran in the opposite direction from the garda lights and sirens. He then openly admitted on the stand that he got his family to burn the very clothes he was wearing on the day Ms Murphy was killed.
When he was arrested and taken to Tullamore Garda Station on January 18, Puska kept his mouth shut - and brazenly gave ridiculous no comment answers to key questions about his DNA being found under Ms Murphy’s fingernails and on the bike found at the scene. Ms Stack, who had gone out running on the canal on the afternoon Ms Murphy was killed, was a compelling witness, and told how she looked into the bushes and saw the man attacking the woman, before he turned to her and shouted at her to “get away.”
Particularly harrowing moments stand out, like when Ashling’s devastated father Ray placed his head in his hands and was heard crying as State Pathologist Dr Sally-Ann Collis outlined in detail how his daughter had died. During the trial he had a cleanly shaven face, and had long dark hair that for most of it was tied into a knot, but in the final days was worn down straight.
Throughout his evidence on the stand Puska remained calm and sat back in the chair in a relaxed manner, almost as though he thought he was going to be believed. What was clear from the evidence shown in the trial and seen in harrowing CCTV footage, was the image of a man who acted more like an animal stalking his prey, than simply someone out cycling on a bike that day.
