The International Protection Appeals Tribunal (IPAT) ended 2023 with a backlog of nearly 4,000 cases, and has warned that it will need extra resources as numbers continue to grow this year

There was a 300 per cent increase in the number of cases referred to the International Protection Appeals Tribunal last year in respect of asylum seekers who had been refused permission to remain in the country.

IPAT managed to deal with 1,701 appeals during 2023, leaving a total of 3,908 cases pending at the end of the year. And the chairperson of the tribunal, Hilkka Becker, warned in the annual report that the substantial increase is set to continue in 2024 and beyond. The rising number of appeals was directly linked to similar increases in the volume of applications for international protection, the report noted, highlighting that 13,277 applications had been made to the International Protection Office in 2023, leaving it with a pending caseload of over 18,000 at the end of the year.
