Aoife Martin: 'At the end of the day nothing that was said on Liveline was new. If you have any sort of online presence, especially if you’re transgender, then you’ll have heard it all before.'

Aoife Martin ON THURSDAY, 9 June, a group calling itself The Countess was given a platform on RTE Radio 1’s Liveline programme, hosted by Joe Duffy.

The group were there to object about the erasure of the word “woman” from legislation that was going through the Dáil, we were told by Sandra, a representative of The Countess. The word “woman” was being replaced by the word “person”. There are, however, several pages for the use of the term “trans identified”. They seem quite happy to tie themselves up in linguistic Gordian knots to avoid giving any sort of legitimacy to trans women. The first casualty of the culture war is, it seems, language. At the end of the day nothing that was said on Liveline was new. If you have any sort of online presence, especially if you’re transgender, then you’ll have heard it all before.

If this had happened to any other minority group there would have been uproar – and rightly so. At one point on Friday Duffy asked at what would happen if the under 15s girls’ team from Lusk had to play a team from the capital who were all “born as boys” but were now “identifying as women”. Such was the level of discourse.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration has moved forward with a proposal that would deny Medicaid coverage for anyone seeking trans affirming healthcare, including hormone blockers, hormone therapy, surgery, and any “other procedures that alter primary or secondary characteristics”. #Open journalism No news is bad news Support The Journal Your contributions will help us continue to deliver the stories that are important to youI do not use these words lightly but trans people’s rights are under attack and RTÉ, and Liveline in particular, should know better. Our national broadcaster does not need to add to this.People can and do say what they like about trans people. RTÉ, however, is not obliged to give them a platform for the sake of a debate.

What trans rights is Aoife referring to? Trans people in Ireland share all the rights of everyone in this country. The GRA however, does need to be reviewed. Women’s voices will be heard. We are rising

I think that there are sometimes competing rights though.

Why is calling a woman a woman equivalent to denying trans rights?

Oh the outrage at a teeny tiny minority, the fire stoked by lots of think tank money. Just mind your own business and get on with your life. You'll never be affected by any of this fear. Oh, and Womens sports will not implode either, seeing as everyone is suddenly interested now

You don’t see trans men (from women) shouting about racing men in swimming, track etc. Why? Because they would lose. Trans women want it because they can win in this setting where they never would have won in a mens race

Is this the same Aoife Martin that used to attack anyone on Twitter who didn’t share the same opinions as Martins?!? This is all before admitting to being trans & becoming so righteous. Now more then ever, women need their rights protected & not to be abused for doing so!

HumanRights are being violated in the Uk by clinicallyvulnerablefamilies facing fines & imprisonment for keeping kidssafe at home effectively making us put a Price on our childslives healthcomesfirst bullies nototories standupforyourrights

Trans woman = a bloke i:e a cock

Bullshit, freaks are getting out of hand and need to be put back in their place. This codology is just rubbish

'Aoife' Martin, what a joke

This is going to turn violent, I can tell you men are not going to allow their daughters be treated like this by the trans mob. Be warned.

The unvaccinated had their rights debated and taken. No fucks were given by most people. Some, including elected officials, said the actions taken didn't go far enough.

People are entitled to discuss issues which have an effect socially Not everyone has to pretend a man in a dress is a women

One of the rights according to the author seems to be ,' for trans people to get gender-affirming care before the age of 12.' So sex changes for kids or life altering medication. This extreme position is exactly why open societies must discuss the issue freely.

I'm sorry, but the last thing I want to see after a week's work on Friday evening is a sissy in a dress. Its biologically hardwired into me to be repulsed by it.

Pathetic Journalism, utterly pathetic

Always of great value to get a male's perspective on women's issues.

Why doesn't the journal ask why these men who have penises and XY chromosomes (females have XX) want to invade women's toilets, changing rooms, sports, hospital wards? Women shouldn't have to fight for their right to safe space. No penises in females safe spaces.

'Trans people are being pushed further and further to the margins of society.'-What an absolute crock of *hit,if anything they are overriding everyone else's.

and The Journal has comments turned off - silencing women and men who support women's rights to have safe single sex spaces. If you have a penis there's no way I'll accept you in women's toilets, changing rooms, hospital wards, sports, etc. Women say NO!

RTE should never have been promoting an ideology. Women's rights are being eroded by men trying to access women's hospital wards, changing rooms, toilets, sports. Women say no, get out of our spaces.

Those with SSI’s have the same human rights as everyone else and are free to live their best life. However SSI should never top trump women right to safety, privacy and dignity nor childrens safeguarding. Aoife Martin is full of 💩

This insane push continues, is the whole world 'trans' suddenly?

Any questions on this? IrelandisFull

The idea of self-identification as regards sex is extremely novel. It's only normal a society would want to debate this. If you trust the merits of your position, and general goodwill and intelligence of the public, you should have no objection to this debate taking place.

Same Journal, Same Tactics, Same propaganda Division, Can't see from Both Sides, Just an EU Attack Dog rag-mag really. All humans have Equal rights, but elitist privilege is something that elites enjoy

I will never submit to an ideology that compels me to deny biology, that seeks to control thought and speech. A worldview that endangers children. An ideology that fights for special legal protections. It's depraved and totalitarian in its nature.

Trans people have exactly the same 'rights' as anyone else. You're talking about privileges. That's a completely different thing.

Everyone is entitled to human rights but we cannot force people to play let's pretend. Men are men and women are women. Wishing otherwise does not change that fact and men should not be competing against women in sports. That's just basic biology

They objected to a male being on the board of a group for females? What’s wrong with that?

Wtf are you afraid of?

I'm 99.9% for trans rights, the sport bit I will always question.

When people start refusing to pay the licence fee things will change.

Well written Aoife. 🏳️‍⚧️❤

Well done aoifemrtn.

the left.... refuse to listen or be an ally to women oppressed in Islamic countries by men, refuse to listen to women threatened by men in dresses who want to be in their spaces & sports. It warms my heart 2 see the journal still has to beg for money

Great article 👏🏿

We're seeing an increasing number in the LGB community who don't want to be associated with the trans movement anymore as you deny the basic reality of biological sex and therefore their existence! homophobia

Au contraire, it will stop there. The people who are vocally against your nonsense are mostly left-leaning people, of all ages and backgrounds. We are the majority and people all over the country are getting angrier to more you lie about us

It’s not rights.vagina = female and penis =male.if mentally you deny this your deluded. Plumbing and electrical issues!!😂

If trans rights don't infringe on womens rights then why is it every single time women try to talk about their rights, trans rights are brought up along with accusations of transphobia & debating trans peoples right to exist? It proves there's conflict

What rights are they missing?

Women talking about women's boundaries being eroded without our consent by self id inthe GRA 2015 is NOT debating trans people right to exist.

How about talking of responsibilites for once? Safeguarding of children from irreversible medical interventions on healthy bodies? Letting female survivors of sexual assault to heal in female only therapy groups? Not housing violent males in female prisons? The list is long

Men are men, women are women & DNA backs that up. Trans men are women trans women are men. This is the only group that wants others to change our understanding of science & grammar to suit less than 1% of the population

At least 'pride month' has shone an uncomfortable light on this lobby group who have twisted science for their own ends. Real Q is how did this lobby group get to influence and control public debate? Let's hope this is the start of a real public wake up.

Load of rubbish I listened to liveline Women are concerned about the erasure of Women from government legislation About the housing of a Rapist with Women in Prison About the dismantling of single sex rights for Women

Is there some law that now dictates that people have to use the phrase 'trans women'? No - there isn't. If people want to use terms such as 'trans-identified male' then they are perfectly entitled to do so. Note also that Aoife has the same rights as any other male person.

The Journal stuffing their trans agenda down people's throats

I see you as a first class citizen. Why? Because you're a man.

What globally recognized human rights do trans people not have but everyone else has? They keep saying this is a human rights issue but no one has ever answered the above question for me. This is a cohert of trans people trying to bully society into seeing things as they do!

Seeking ones rights very important. The problem is when these rights turn into entitlement and infringe on other peoples rights. The trans community unfortunately strays into this quite often. The sentiment in this article is another example of it

Teni are the biggest lobby outfit this country has had in it's history. We have every right to discuss their influence on Govt. No group are off limits regardless of how much power they have over certain politicians and NGOs.

What is a woman?

The Journal owes the Countess a FULL right of reply. Aoife Martin has made allegations that the Countess need to be able to address. I don't see trans people as 2nd class - I just think the male sex offenders housed in Limerick Women's Prison because of GRA is an abuse of women

Aoife has the right to here own opinion, just not her own facts - that is if you are still a Newspaper and not a propaganda arm for this ideology . *Nobody's 'right to exist' was questioned *Nobody's 'human rights' are 'under attack' . *repeating a mantra doesn't make it true.

I am a woman and I make up 50% of the Irish population, I have a cervix, periods and I can birth a baby. Yet you would like to cancel me… forget how you got here did you?

Spot on. We all deserve a seat at the table and sharing time, space and experiences with trans women is not only the correct way to get more results for everyone's bodily autonomy but a pleasure.

Solidarity, its a horrible thing to have people demonise and debate your existance like that. And appalling for the national broadcaster to be complicit in a targeted action by group against trans people under the guise of 'discussion'.

You want to shut down discussion only because you know the majority think you are authoritarians. We all have questions and objections. You can’t keep up this charade for much longer.

Colmogorman 'People can and do say what they like about trans people. RTÉ, however, is not obliged to give them a platform for the sake of a debate. We are not a debate.' This is a contradiction in terms. If people can speak freely on an issue, they can do so on RTE also, end of.

It was asked multiple times on liveline, what human rights are trans people denied that others have. Not 1 example was given. Liveline was a discussion. But apparently discussion is not allowed. Just conform immediately or your a phobe of some description.

when are you going to do an article on child transitioning? What it involves? What medications are used? At what ages? Are they safe? What does the research say? What are the surgeries? Are they successful? Do many detransition? Can a child really consent?

sineadgleeson Thank you Aoife for writing this ❤️

People should really limit exposure to risk of stress online. You will always find someone to argue with you insult you whatever. It is impossible to verify if they are even real comments from a human being . No need running to newspaper everytime someone swears on the internet.

Constantly whining and perpetually insulted

What a load of tosh! Amazing how you Aoife a biological born man can can join the NWCI but I as a biological born female can't because I don't agree with their protocols. National 'WOMEN'S' Council my eye!

I would love to see the lgbtq community set up an exclusively Lgbtq political party. DublinPride

Transgender people already have the same rights as everyone else and people are rightfully angry because pushing this agenda seriously endangers women but more importantly children.Completely narcissistic bs agenda with no basis in reality or biology. Leave the children alone!

A man’s feelings have been hurt. Oh no.

Trans women are biological men, they can never be a woman.

We “deserve a seat at the table” and “we are pushed to the margins” completely ignores the open door policy the govt has given TENI. The whole of society is being brainwashed to suit the marginalised. Kids are being told lies. The country is awash with rainbows. UnderTheRadar

I might also add that a “trans women” is in no way shape or form a woman

DNA is a great truth. Biology trumps gender everyday of the week

Nobody is questioning your rights. Just the insanity of your endless pseudo biology. You can’t just make up stuff and then expect to be taken seriously.

There are plenty of people who haven't heard it all before and who have a right to know about the GRA and how it has resulted in sex offenders being imprisoned with women. Very few people knew that the word woman was being removed from the Maternity act.

You don't have the right to rewrite other peoples reality or language.

Here we go again. Erasure, blah blah. The TheCountessIE Liveline was about women's rights and the erasure of language in legislation.

Why is everything for the “greater good” until it comes to trans issues? They make up less than 1% of the population yet expect to trample all over the hard-won rights of women without question
