Our columnist says she found it hard to read books last year when the world was falling apart, but 2021 has so far reminded her of her love of reading.

Aoife Martin “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”LIKE MANY PEOPLE, I’m finding this latest iteration of lockdown to be particularly tough. Truth be told, at times it’s been a bit of a struggle.

It’s hard to read when the world seems to be falling apart around you. I lost count of the number of books I picked up and put back down again. One of the greatest gifts that you can give a child is a love of reading and one of the greatest phrases in the English language is “Once upon a time…” Those four words, pregnant with possibilities, have enthralled generations of children everywhere. Is that where the magic happens? Is that where those of us who go on to become readers get bitten by the bug? I believe so but it’s more than just that.

My life, as a trans woman, is very ordinary indeed'Why do we read? The easy and most obvious answer to that perennial question is that we read for pleasure.

In a recent Guardian article, former East 17 singer Tony Mortimer, at 50 years of age, described how, until lockdown hit, he had never read a full book.

Stay away from 1984 so, it's too close to the bone lately.

This is lovely, Aoife. Last year was the worst ever for getting any level of concentration to read for me. Also loved seeing Tony Mortimer fall in love with reading last year.

Lovely piece Aoife. Such a gift to have.

Hurrah for books and secondhand bookshops! Reading this column over breakfast got me in a good mood, thanks really needed it

Aoife Martin: 'Trans people have existed since the first organism crawled out of the primordial soup'On International Transgender Day of Visibility, our columnist highlights how vital that increased visibility is for trans kids. I didn't hear of any (Trans people) during the 1840's when we were dying by the thousands from hunger. What about the Neanderthals, was there (Trans people) in those. 😂😂😂😂 FFS humans didn't exist when the first organisms.... etc Why don’t you allow comments on your trans articles and now tweets? Do you not believe that the medicalisation and surgical intervention to physically health people should be debated?

Aoife Martin: No, streaming can never beat the magic of the cinemaOur columnist shares her love of the cinema and laments the impact of lockdown and streaming on the whole experience Lovely article! Last film I saw in a cinema was Bohemian Rhapsody, about 2 weeks before 1st baba arrived. I remember her reacting very strongly to the music, first film I watched 'with' her. You keep mentioning big screen, you can literally get a projector for less than 100 quid, 200inch screen on the wall, comfy sofa, popcorn & even a beer, cinema will go the way off video rental shops, its inevitable I love going to the cinema, watching a film with no distractions is two hours of bliss

Aoife Martin: The abuse endured by trans people every day shows Ireland has a long way to goThis week, our columnist highlights the challenges faced by trans people every day. Abuse? If trans people got on with it nobody would know the difference. To be honest nobody cares what they are doing so they should just live how they want. I think some feed off attention both positive and negative. We're probably the most tolerant place on earth for these people. They need to shake off this victim mentality. Aoife Martin ignores the canary in the coalmine - in Limerick Women's prison there are at least 2 male bodied sex offenders who have had zero treatment to transition. who have a cert to say they are women, housed with vulnerable women. This is an abhorrent betrayal of women.
