Had the Girls in Green found that elusive clinical edge in the final-third last night against Sweden, they wouldn’t have been staring down the barrel of a 3-0 defeat.
Trying to guess their approach to tonight's game proved as tricky as trying to work out Eileen Gleeson’s starting-11, particularly when she was robbed of the injured Denise O’Sullivan. Agg raised a few eyebrows early on with a Roy Keane-Marc Overmars-style ‘welcome to Dublin’, which left Nathalie Bjorn crumpled on the turf.
They were already a goal ahead at this stage, thanks to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s 26th minute strike. But that was unreflective of an encouraging Irish first-half performance. If only Ireland’s play in the final third was more clinical, then they might have engineered a repeat of that magical day in Gothenburg two years ago when they raced into the lead.
It was Ireland’s move of the match as they switched the play with dizzying speed from left to right, and into the centre.
