Taoiseach Leo Varadkar laid down a clear marker on the limits of borrowing when he spoke to the Dáil on Thursday morning. In doing so he was sending a clear message about the task facing the next government.
But there was another part to Varadkar’s message which had not been heard in such plain terms before, and marked a clear change in tone from his pronouncements on the subject of late. If this was a conceptual point, Varadkar quickly distilled it to specifics: “We should not assume that being able to borrow cheaply now means we will be able to borrow cheaply in six months or a year’s time. The world has changed so much in the past six months. We would be naïve to think it could not change again and quickly,” he said.
