Amazon employs 5,000 people across the country and 1.6 million worldwide

Amazon is expected to cut tens of thousands of jobs worldwide in what is said to be the largest job cuts in the company’s history.

The news comes after 500 roles were created in Ireland this year alone as the company opened a new warehouse in Baldonnel.The New York Times reported the news, after speaking to “people with knowledge” on the condition of anonymity as they are not authorised to speak on the matter publicly. The Facebook parent company employs 3,000 full-time employees in Ireland and a further 6,000 contractors work directly with the company in various capacities across the country.

"We are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1.”
