The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in 2018 has led to pressures on the system, Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has said

Almost 150 complaints were made by refugees living in direct provision centres last year, according to a new report. And he said that direct provision is not a suitable long-term system for those waiting for a decision on their asylum application.

Other complaints received were over food, lack of cooking facilities and the availability of transport. “My staff also reported a more positive overall atmosphere at some of the more established centres from their autumn visits compared to previous visits to those same centres, with fewer complaints from residents than before.”

The Ombudsman said that due to an increase in those seeking accommodation that additional centres across the country were opened to help deal with the huge demand. He said in his report: “This has put capacity pressure on the system and led to seven new centres being opened in 2018.
