The Camogie Association Congress decision not to allow players to wear shorts as an alternative to skorts has been slammed

A three-time All-Ireland winner has slammed the Camogie Association Congress' decision not to allow players to wear shorts as an alternative to skorts.

Earlier this month, two motions looking to change the rule which means players much wear skorts were both unsuccessful, meaning that the rule will remain in place for at least another three years. Joan Maher, who won All-Irelands with Dublin in 1959, 1960 and 1961, believes that the controversial decision could result in young girls not playing camogie. She wrote in a letter to the Irish Times: "As a member of the Dublin All-Ireland winning camogie teams of 1959, 1960 and 1961, I was stunned and dismayed at the recent decision at the Camogie Association Congress to continue to ban players from wearing shorts in matches.

She continued: "Camogie is a great sport but young girls will not participate if the Camogie Association makes ludicrous decisions.Dublin camogie star Niamh Gannon echoed those comments while speaking at a Staycity Aparthotels and Dublin GAA media event on Tuesday, saying: “It’s hard to believe that people who aren’t playing or are not involved on the pitch are making these decisions. Personally, I would much prefer to wear shorts.

She added: "I’ve heard people say that for younger girls playing, that play football and camogie, they’re deciding to play football because they can wear shorts. So we could actually be losing younger girls just over the fact that they don’t have the choice to wear shorts."
