The airport was shut for a period on Tuesday night after the package was found on a live flight en route to Ireland

An airport in the UK was shut for a period on Tuesday evening after a suspicious package was found on board an Aer Lingus flight headed to Ireland.

All of the crew and passengers on the plane disembarked to check the situation, with other flights being diverted or held while the suspicious package was assessed as emergency services were called in. A spokeswoman for Birmingham Airport said: “Birmingham Airport has temporarily suspended operations due to a security incident on an aircraft.
