The website for Irish women

Growing up in an Irish household is an education in itself. You’ll pick up a few life lessons that will stand to you as you grow older and are likely to come in useful. If there’s one place you’re better off keeping quiet, it’s the sitting room during a match.

Rugby, football, hurling, soccer, whatever the case may be. Unless you want to be silenced with a dirty look or the mother of all roars, staying schtum is recommended. There is a lot to be said for a proper fry complete with all the trimmings. That means both types of puddings, brown bread and fried potatoes.“Who’s she, the cat’s mother?” or “were you born in a field?” are just two of the phrases you’re likely to pick up growing up in an Irish household.

The special biscuits come out, you’re warned to be on your best behaviour and before you know it, you’re doing the exact same thing in your own house. If you’re making for tea, remember to offer it to everyone in the house. You never want to be the selfish tea maker who only ever makes a cup for themselves.

We’re all for introducing tea charts, so at least if you’re tasked with tea duty, you know exactly who takes two sugars/a drop of milk/so strong you could stand a spoon in it.This is something you NEVER want to do as it’s guaranteed to rile an Irish Mammy. The worse thing is, it is ridiculously easy to forget you ever turned it on.In a country where the weather is ridiculously unpredictable, you can never underestimate the value of good weather.
