Some 18,700 PUP overpayments or incorrect payments recorded up to the end of July

More than €46 million was overpaid or wrongly claimed in pandemic unemployment payments during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Denis Naughten, Independent TD and chairman of the Oireachtas committee on social protection, said 870,000 people had claimed the PUP and those who received an overpayment represented about 2 per cent of all claims, which was “low”. The Roscommon-Galway TD said the overpayment highlighted “far broader issues” in terms of the management and review of social welfare claims.
