Yonatan Boinbalan, a farmer in Kampung Sokon, Fatukoa Village, Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday , was in his farmland. He complained that the water discharge of the Oetun River had decreased drastically, making it unable to supply water to the field since the beginning of May 2024. His 3,000 square meters of rice fields are in danger of failing to harvest.The government has prepared 2,000 water pumps to anticipate the threat of drought in 22 districts/cities in East Nusa Tenggara.
Land that is currently being cultivated for the second rice planting season and is at risk of crop failure due to reduced or drying irrigation or river water will be prioritized.Farmers in Oesao, Kupang Regency, NTT, plant rice, Saturday . Substitute crops for rice, such as cassava, taro, sweet potatoes, and beans, are considered to be a good alternative food source for the community. Young children should also be encouraged to consume these local foods from an early age.
In the midst of the current threats of drought and climate change, the government hopes to maintain food stocks in NTT. Farmers are also encouraged to utilize local or alternative food sources to reduce dependence on rice. The average rice production in East Nusa Tenggara ranges from 2-3 tons of dry paddy per hectare. If 30,000 hectares successfully reach harvest, there will be 60,000-90,000 tons of paddy. If converted into rice, the average yield is 1-2 tons of rice per hectare.
