Outfielder Jarren Duran's remarks were caught during a Sunday game against the Houston Astros.

Jarren Duran , an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox , is apologizing for using a homophobic slur to reference a heckler during a game on Sunday. A fan in the stands shouted several times during the sixth inning of Boston’s game against the Houston Astros that Duran needed a tennis racket.

The outfielder hadn’t recorded a hit in his first two at-bats. Duran then said, “shut up, you f----ing fa---t” as he looked toward the stands, according to broadcast of the game. The Red Sox said they addressed the comment immediately after the game, and the outfielder apologized.. “I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community.”Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person,” he said.“We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity,” the team’s statement reads. Duran’s batting average for his last seven games sits at .276 and .291 for the season. Before Sunday’s contest, the Red Sox gave him the Heart and Hustle Award, which honors players who embody the “values,” “spirit” and “traditions” of baseball while demonstrating passion for the game. One of the past winners of the award is Kevin Pillar, who received it in 2021. Four years earlier, the Toronto Blue Jays suspended him after he used “inappropriate language” to cap off a strikeout against an Atlanta Braves pitcher.statement“In no way is this kind of behaviour accepted or tolerated, nor is it a reflection of the type of the inclusive organization we strive to be. We would like to extend our own apologies to all fans, Major League Baseball and especially the LGBTQ community,” the statement reads.he felt “completely and utterly embarrassed” by putting the Blue Jays and their fans in a certain position. “Last night, following my at-bat in the 7th inning, I used inappropriate language towards Braves pitcher Jason Motte. By doing so I had just helped extend the use of a word that has no place in baseball, in sports or anywhere in society today,” he said.
