A 'health-conscious' head teacher, Alison Higgins, died by suicide after fearing she was developing dementia and becoming a burden on her family, an inquest has revealed. She was described as a thoughtful and inspirational leader at Barham Primary School.
The inquest into the death of Alison Higgins, a respected head teacher , revealed she tragically took her own life due to fears surrounding potential dementia and a deep-seated concern about becoming a burden to her loved ones.
Mrs. Higgins, aged 61, had dedicated a decade of her life to Barham Primary School near Canterbury, earning a reputation as a thoughtful, inspirational, and caring educator. The court heard that she had been grappling with insomnia, often spending sleepless nights working on her laptop, and had previously suffered a mini-stroke.
While she hadn't received a formal dementia diagnosis, she strongly believed she was developing the condition, leading to anxieties about her ability to manage daily tasks both at home and in her professional life. This fear, coupled with a long-term diagnosis of depression for which she was prescribed sertraline, contributed to a profound sense of hopelessness. Her husband, Christopher Higgins, with whom she shared 31 years of marriage, discovered her unresponsive at their home on December 8th.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead after 40 minutes of attempted resuscitation. Mr. Higgins, in a deeply moving statement, painted a picture of a woman devoted to her family and career. He highlighted her passion for education, stemming from her early teaching experiences in Portugal and Italy, and her remarkable ability to connect with and support those who were struggling.
He emphasized her unwavering dedication to their sons, George and Jamie, and her joy in witnessing their growth into young men. He fondly recalled her appreciation for life’s simple pleasures – time with loved ones, coastal walks, swimming, good food, and travel, particularly cherishing memories from their time in Italy.
The coroner, Katrina Hepburn, concluded that Mrs. Higgins intentionally ended her life, citing the presence of notes found at the property and a recent history of low mood as key factors. The coroner also noted there was no indication she anticipated being discovered or rescued. The impact of Mrs. Higgins’ death resonated deeply within the Barham community and beyond.
Barham Primary School expressed profound sadness, acknowledging the significant loss felt by the children, families, and staff who had been touched by her leadership and kindness. The school described her as an inspirational and caring head teacher who was wholly committed to the well-being and education of her students. Barham Parish Council and Reverend Stefan Thomas of St John the Baptist Church also offered heartfelt tributes, recognizing her dedication to the school and the wider village community.
Reverend Thomas specifically highlighted her unwavering commitment to her students and teaching staff over a decade. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the hidden struggles individuals may face, even those who appear to be pillars of strength and positivity, and the importance of seeking support when grappling with mental health challenges.
The case underscores the devastating impact of perceived cognitive decline and the fear of becoming a burden on others, highlighting the need for increased awareness and accessible mental health resources
