The Golden Spike Foundation has secured a permanent location for its 43-foot golden spike monument at This Is The Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City after plans for a Brigham City site collapsed due to logistical and funding challenges. The sculpture honors the builders and impacts of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
A monumental 43-foot golden spike sculpture, a powerful tribute to the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad , has found a permanent home at This Is The Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City , according to an announcement from the Golden Spike Foundation on Friday.
The massive, 8,000-pound artwork, commissioned in 2021, was originally destined for a standalone park in Brigham City, Utah, but logistical and financial hurdles made that site infeasible. The foundation determined that the heritage park, with its established mission and high visitor traffic, offers superior visibility, accessibility, and educational potential.
The sculpture's design, created by artist Blair Buswell, intricately depicts the "Wedding of the Rails" at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869, and incorporates symbolic representations of the diverse laborers-including Chinese and Irish immigrants, Civil War veterans, and others-who built the railroads, as well as innovators, inventors, and the profound impact on Native American communities and the nation's westward expansion. Foundation leadership expressed enthusiasm that the piece will serve as a lasting legacy for public education and storytelling about this pivotal chapter in U.S. and Utah history, ensuring future generations can engage with these complex narratives in a dedicated historical setting
