What is, for you, the most recognizable image of Lee Jeans?“The unforgettable photo of the young girl in dungarees on the cover of ‘In The American West’ by Richard Avedon is one of the most emblematic images of the Lee brand.In the 1970s and 1980s, Italy was fascinated by the American West, but American culture often reached the Italian public filtered through the lens of homegrown directors such as Leone and Corbucci, who offered a new image of America.

I have had an unusual career for a fashion designer. After graduating from Central Saint Martin's School of Art in London I took a job at Slam City Skates, designing their in-house graphic label. I was asked to create a clothing line featuring their t-shirt graphics. There was no structure or guidelines, so I just learned from my own mistakes, which were numerous.

The challenges are more commercial than creative. Women have been wearing men's clothes for as long as I can remember and now the opposite is happening everywhere in fashion. The real difficulty is how to communicate to a bigger audience that the same pair of jeans will fit them just as well as their partner. This collection is entirely unisex and people can go for a fitted or loose fit but the shapes are the same.
