Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love,” said King Edward VIII when he abdicated the British throne in 1936. The woman he was speaking of, of course, was Wallis Simpson.
His abdication caused public outcry: “They found the idea of such a brash woman, however sassy and well-dressed, becoming queen repugnant,” Anne Sebba, author of Wallis’s biography,, tells Vogue. The twice-divorced American socialite married the Duke of Windsor on June 3, 1937 at the Château de Candé, Monts, Indre-et-Loire, France, wearing a Mainbocher design in “Wallis blue”. Not a single member of the royal family was in attendance, and the couple lived out their days in exile.
