A 'try,' the equivalent of a touchdown in American football, is worth five points, but the ball must touch the ground to register. Following a try, a conversion kick, similar to an extra point in American football, is attempted for an additional two points. Lastly, a drop goal or penalty kick can award three points. Penalties are awarded when a team commits an offense, giving the opposing team the option to kick for territory or attempt a three-point kick.
