Mexico will deploy robot dogs during the 2026 World Cup to scout threats and protect police before officers intervene.

Robot dogs will patrol parts of Mexico during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, giving police a new way to assess threats before officers step into potentially dangerous situations.Authorities in Guadalupe, a municipality in the Monterrey metro area, have announced the deployment of four quadrupedal robot units to support law enforcement during the global football tournament, which Mexico is co-hosting with the US and Canada.

The robots, known locally as the K9-X division, are designed to act as a first-response tool. They can enter confined or risky environments, transmit live video back to police teams, and issue voice commands to suspects, reducing the need for officers to immediately expose themselves to harm.Guadalupe’s city council spent about 2.5 million pesos, roughly $145,000, on the four units. Each robot is equipped with cameras, night-vision lenses, and ruggedized materials that allow it to move across uneven terrain, climb stairs, and operate in low-visibility conditions.During a public demonstration, one robot was shown navigating an abandoned building, relaying real-time footage to officers positioned behind it. In the scenario, the robot confronted an armed individual and used a loudspeaker to instruct him to drop his weapon.Robots before officers enterGuadalupe mayor Hector Garcia said the goal is to protect officers during the early moments of an incident. “The purpose of the robot dogs is to support police officers with initial intervention… to protect the physical safety of officers,” he said.Garcia added that the machines will be used “in case of any altercation,” particularly in situations involving fights, intoxicated individuals, or hard-to-access areas around World Cup venues.Importantly, officials emphasized that the robots are not weaponized. Their role is limited to surveillance, communication, and risk assessment, acting as an advance set of eyes and ears rather than an enforcement tool.BBVA Stadium, which will be renamed Estadio Monterrey during the tournament, is set to host four World Cup matches. With large crowds expected to move through surrounding neighborhoods, local authorities are focusing on early threat detection rather than reactive policing.Broader security pushThe robot dogs are just one piece of a wider security upgrade planned for the tournament. Guadalupe has increased police patrols and invested in aerial surveillance systems, including drones and counter-drone technology, to monitor large public gatherings.Mexico expects millions of international visitors during the World Cup, raising concerns around crowd control, unauthorized drone activity, and rapid response to disturbances. Similar robotic systems have already been tested by police and military agencies worldwide for bomb disposal, reconnaissance, and disaster response.By deploying robotic scouts instead of human officers in uncertain scenarios, Guadalupe is betting that automation can lower risk while improving situational awareness during one of the world’s most-watched sporting events.
