) - Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons is responding after body camera video of an interaction involving a deputy and a so-called First Amendment auditor. The Escambia County Sheriff ’s Office released body camera video that appears to show a deputy walking up to a man who is recording in a neighborhood while standing in the street.
The deputy and the man begin arguing back and forth before the man approaches and circles the deputy, who eventually pushes him twice, and they continue to yell at each other. The sheriff’s office says this is part of a nationwide trend where people who call themselves auditors go to public places and record video to test if their First Amendment rights are respected. The sheriff said the deputy was placed on administrative assignment because the deputy’s actions did not reflect the department’s standards. But after an internal review, the deputy will be returning to duty, he said. “While we may or may not agree with every individual’s motive the protections guaranteed in the constitution apply to everyone. After an internal review of our deputy’s actions appropriate measures have been taken and our deputy will be back to serve the citizens of Escambia County with courtesy, integrity and professionalism,” Simmons said. Two arrested in Evergreen drug raid, 1 facing trafficking chargesBefore the SSUS becomes a reef, Okaloosa County plans for diver safety and treatment accessMobile family faces rising gas costs for children’s medical trips to Birmingham
