An Irish woman named Flanagan recently had an unexpected encounter with Ryanair 's baggage policies at Dublin Airport . She was traveling with a 750 ml metal water bottle attached to her backpack, a setup she had used for numerous previous trips without issue. However, upon attempting to board her flight to Stansted Airport, she was informed that her water bottle needed to be zipped into her bag and approved by staff.
Flanagan recounted her experience, explaining that she was among a small group of passengers pulled aside and asked to repack their bags. Despite her efforts to compress her belongings, the overstuffed backpack with the water bottle protruding was deemed too large by Ryanair staff. She was informed that she would have to pay an extra fee to bring her bag on board. Confused and frustrated, Flanagan pointed out that she had previously flown with the same bag and contents without any problems. She also noted that other passengers with laptops, bulky food containers, and travel pillows seemed to pass through without facing similar scrutiny. Despite her arguments, Flanagan was ultimately forced to pay approximately $63 – more than the cost of her round-trip ticket – to accommodate her water bottle. Ryanair defended its actions, stating that Flanagan had booked a Basic Fare ticket, which only allowed for a small personal bag.
