Rising grocery prices, particularly in Pennsylvania, are causing significant financial strain. Anthony Battaglia, vice president of Tony Sunseri Wholesale Food Distributors, highlights the food service industry's ongoing struggles to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of escalating diesel costs on transportation expenses. Congressman John Joyce blames the Biden administration's 'out-of-control spending' for the inflation, while Senator Dave McCormick advocates for reduced government spending and deregulation. The bird flu is identified as a contributing factor to rising egg prices, with Battaglia expressing concerns about further price increases in the near future.
Inflation is significantly impacting Pennsylvania , with grocery prices surging nearly 4% over the past year, placing the state second only to California in grocery inflation. Anthony Battaglia, vice president of Tony Sunseri Wholesale Food Distributors in Johnstown, highlighted the struggles faced by the food service industry in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
'The food service industry was one of the hardest hit during COVID, through all of the different types of social distancing, supply chain disruptions, we never really recovered like some other industries have,' Battaglia explained. He further emphasized that escalating diesel costs are compounding the issue. 'Paying three, four, five dollars a gallon in diesel to transport to customers directly affects the cost of both getting products in to us and delivering to them,' Battaglia stated. Pennsylvania Congressman John Joyce attributed the inflation to 'out of control spending' by the Biden administration. 'The American people have suffered from rising prices and rampant inflation over the last four years, spurred on by the out-of-control spending of the Biden Administration,' stated Rep. John Joyce, M.D. Senator Dave McCormick echoed this sentiment, advocating for reduced government spending and deregulation to stimulate business opportunities. He also acknowledged the impact of the bird flu, which has driven up egg prices, highlighting the need to address this issue through the upcoming farm bill. However, Battaglia cautioned that egg prices may continue to rise due to upcoming seasons like baking season and Lent. He expressed pessimism about a return to normal pricing in the near future, stating, 'Everything I hear, everything I read, it's going to be months before this goes back to being a normal pricing on eggs, and there's really no end in sight.' Battaglia also pointed out that regulations in recent years and a labor shortage are additional contributing factors to the escalating prices.
