The team behind Humble Sea Brewing, a Santa Cruz-based craft beermaker, is bringing brews and views to Fisherman's Wharf

Craft beers are getting ready to flow in Fisherman’s Wharf now that a brewery has at long last opened its doors. Humble Sea Brewing , a Santa Cruz-based brewery, held a soft opening Friday for its Pier 39 taproom, a little more than a year after the beermaker first announced plans to open an outpost on San Francisco ’s northern waterfront .

Frank Krueger, Humble Sea’s creative director, told The Examiner that Friday’s event was “a long time coming” and that “it feels very good to finally be open.” For now, the 80-seat taproom and adjoining beer garden will be open Fridays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m; Saturdays from noon to 9 p.m. and Sundays noon to 8 p.m. The brewery will hold a grand opening on May 29th to coincide with Memorial Day weekend. Humble Sea first opened in 2015 on the Santa Cruz Wharf, with the beermaker becoming known for its craft India pale ales in the ensuing years. Krueger said the new Pier 39 outpost mirrors the Santa Cruz location in that “it’s just a combination of people visiting — tourists — and then also the locals coming out and becoming regulars.” The dynamic “was something we weren’t expecting on the wharf at Santa Cruz,” Krueger said, but his team has “similar hopes for San Francisco.”The Pier 39 outpost riffs on both the company’s nautical branding, as well as its nearby surroundings. Fixtures include buoys and lights hanging from the ceiling, as well as wood paneling.“We’re all about drinking beer outside,” he told The Examiner. “We thrive when it’s good weather and we suffer when it’s not. That’s just how it’s always been for us.” Ex // Top Stories Lawmakers reluctantly float sales tax as public transit boon Advocates contend it may be among the last, best options to save regional transit Muttville new home is a place for new friends — canine and human San Franciscans are finding community and, sometimes, even love State, VC Khosla put Martins Beach case on hold to talk settlement Sides postponed for negotiations on day set for trial Humble Sea initially planned to open by Labor Day in September 2024, but Krueger said the timetable was pushed back for “standard bureaucratic reasons.”He said Pier 39 handled a majority of the space’s construction and helped Humble Sea navigate The City’s permitting process.Scott Gentner, Pier 39’s president and CEO, said that Humble Sea Brewing’s soft opening “is a true celebration of Small Business Week,” The City’s annual weeklong event highlighting local entrepreneurs. This year’s Small Business Week concluded Friday. Gentner said his team was “excited for our guests to enjoy these local craft beers” while also taking in “the beauty of the San Francisco waterfront.” Bri Maughan, executive director of the Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District, said her organization “is thrilled to welcome Humble Sea Brewing to Pier 39.” She said the brewery’s IPAs and “coastal charm bring the perfect connection to our maritime heritage, adding to the renewed vitality and bright future of Fisherman's Wharf.” When visiting the taproom, guests can expect to feel as if they’ve been “slightly removed from The City,” Krueger said, noting that the taproom provides sweeping views of Pier 39’s sea lions and San Francisco Bay. “Taprooms are a dime a dozen but it’s really cool to have our beer experience be part of another experience that people come from all over the world to check out,” he said.
