The hydrogen stove can turn water into fuel and deliver up to six hours of clean cooking using just 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of power.
A clean-tech startup has unveiled a compact, plug-and-play hydrogen cooking stove for homes and commercial kitchens, which harnesses water to generate its own fuel. Developed by Indian oil and natural gas company Greenvize, the system consists of a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, which is directly integrated into a standard cooking unit.
This allows users to generate hydrogen from water on demand with the turn of a knob. The system doesn’t require storage or distribution infrastructure and splits water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. The hydrogen is immediately used as a cooking fuel, and water vapor is released as the only exhaust. Meanwhile, the unit releases oxygen, which can significantly improve the air quality of the nearby environment. Producing fuel from waterSanjeev Choudhary, Greenvize director and co-founder, noted that for hydrogen production, which begins once the stove is turned on, the system requires about 100 milliliters of distilled or reverse osmosis water, and roughly one kilowatt-hour of electricity. This is enough to deliver up to six hours of continuous cooking. The unit can also be paired with rooftop solar panels, which can be highly relevant for regions with unstable electricity supply or limited access to gas distribution networks.“In its standard configuration, the electrolyzer is directly coupled with the cooking unit, with hydrogen generated and consumed in real time, eliminating the need for storage,” Choudhary explained. He also noted that the system can be equipped with hydrogen storage. This way, the system would be able to produce fuel during off-peak hours or periods of solar generation. The fuel would be used later during peak demand.Storage options include compressed gas cylinders operating at 200-300 bar, or low-pressure buffer tanks for short-term balancing. Choudhary said the system can be customized for different needs and uses. “We can also supply hydrogen storage solutions based on the client’s requirement,” he added. “This includes storage cylinders/cascade systems.”Flexible energy useAccording to Choudhary, the technology is an efficient energy option. Traditional induction cooktops can use up to two kilowatts per burner, adding up to 12 kilowatt-hours over a six-hour cooking period. In contrast, the firm’s solution uses less electricity by converting it into hydrogen fuel that is burned directly. Greenvize stated that the system’s robust stainless-steel construction and integrated safety systems make it suitable for continuous and reliable usage.“While both induction stoves and the Greenvize hydrogen cooking system use electricity, the efficiency, flexibility, and real-world usability are fundamentally different, especially for hotels, community kitchens, and high-demand cooking environments,” he said. The company is currently targeting high-demand environments, including hotels, community kitchens, and rural settings, where flexibility and reliability are critical.“Our hydrogen cooking stove is developed in alignment with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, supporting the transition towards a sustainable and energy-secure future,” Greenvize concluded. The single-burner hydrogen stove is priced at INR 105,000 plus GST . The double-burner version costs about INR 150,000 plus GST.
