Intel has joined Elon Musk ’s ambitious $20 billion “TeraFab” semiconductor project, marking a major step in the effort to scale AI chip production in the United States.The partnership brings together Intel with Musk-led ventures Tesla , SpaceX, and xAI to build next-generation chip fabrication facilities in Austin, Texas.
The announcement came via a post on Musk-owned platform X, where Intel outlined its role in advancing the project’s manufacturing goals. The company also noted Musk recently visited its facilities.It described hosting him as “fun” in its social media post.Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan praised Musk’s approach to industrial disruption. He called TeraFab a “step change” in semiconductor manufacturing.“This is exactly what is needed in semiconductor manufacturing today,” Tan wrote.Intel added that it would help Musk’s companies “refactor” silicon fabrication technology. However, it did not disclose technical specifics.TeraFab aims to produce one terawatt of AI compute annually.That level of output would far exceed current industry norms. Continuous operation at that scale would demand enormous energy resources.The project also plans to integrate multiple stages of chip production.It would combine logic and memory manufacturing in a single facility. This approach differs from standard semiconductor practices.Musk has also pushed for faster development cycles. In January, he said the team targets a nine-month chip production cycle. That would undercut the roughly annual cadence used by NVIDIA and AMD.Tesla previously developed its own Dojo D1 chip.The chip supported video processing for autonomous driving systems. It was also planned for the Optimus robot.However, Tesla dissolved its Dojo team in August 2025. The company shifted toward using third-party chips instead.Despite those changes, TeraFab reflects Musk’s continued push for vertical integration.With Intel now onboard, the project gains critical manufacturing expertise.The partnership could reshape how the U.S. builds and scales advanced semiconductors.
