A Cy-Fair ISD behavior specialist faces charges of injury to a disabled person following the death of a 16-year-old autistic student after an alleged forceful shove at the Carlton Center. The student died from complications including oxygen deprivation.
A Cy-Fair Independent School District behavior specialist is facing criminal charges following the death of a 16-year-old student with autism. Donald Perkins has been charged with injury to a disabled person after an incident that occurred on April 23rd at the Carlton Center , a campus within the district.
Court records detail a disturbing sequence of events that culminated in the student’s tragic passing. The incident began on a school bus where the student reportedly took a piece of food from the bus driver. After consuming the food, the student was removed from the bus by Perkins and escorted to the Carlton Center. According to court documents obtained by ABC13, Perkins then engaged in what is described as a 'unprovoked physical assault,' forcefully shoving the student into a classroom.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the impact, with records noting a distinct 'loud thud' as the student made contact with the floor. The documentation reveals that despite knowing the student had food in his mouth and a pre-existing history of choking hazards, Perkins proceeded with the forceful push. Following the shove, the student was able to regain his footing and sit down independently.
However, he soon began to exhibit signs of choking, prompting immediate concern from staff members who were heard expressing their distress. The student’s condition rapidly deteriorated, with records stating his body 'became limp shortly thereafter.
' Immediate medical attention was sought, and the student was initially transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to The Texas Medical Center in a critical state. Sadly, the student succumbed to his injuries and passed away on April 29th, as confirmed by communication with his father. Medical reports indicate the student suffered a 'catastrophic medical event,' characterized by a prolonged period of oxygen deprivation, ultimately leading to his death.
The Harris County Jail is currently holding Perkins as the investigation continues. The Cy-Fair ISD has expressed profound grief over the loss of the student. Superintendent Dr. Doug Killian released a statement conveying the district’s devastation and extending sincere condolences to the family. He emphasized that the entire school community is mourning alongside the family during this incredibly difficult time.
The district is cooperating fully with law enforcement officials in their investigation. This incident raises serious questions about the training and protocols in place for handling students with disabilities, particularly those with known medical vulnerabilities. The charges against Perkins underscore the gravity of the alleged actions and the potential consequences of failing to provide appropriate care and support to vulnerable students.
The case is expected to draw significant attention to the need for enhanced safety measures and a greater understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with autism and other disabilities within the educational system. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the legal process unfolds. The community is left grappling with the tragic loss of a young life and demanding accountability for the events that led to this devastating outcome
