However, in the context of a lack of a societal mask mandate, a campus mandate may not offer significant benefits. Students are not only together in the classroom. They live, eat, play, party, work, travel and exercise together, in settings where masks are commonly not worn.
These are theoretical arguments, but the reality has been seen in other universities. While masks and vaccine mandates may have helped limit the spread of COVID-19 at Cornell through 2021, the emergence of the Omicron variant changed things significantly. Afound that the impact of Cornell’s infection-control measures was fairly minimal after the emergence of Omicron, with large-scale transmission on campus that mirrored what was happening in the rest of society.
But paramount to all of this is ensuring students get the experience they have sacrificed for two years in order to protect the rest of society, while recognizing that the pandemic has fundamentally changed. It is not reasonable to deny students a higher-level education based on a medical decision that has minimal benefit.

the entire narrative of COVID was mostly wrong. Schools should have never shut down because kids could have gone to school safely all along. Masks did virtually nothing, if anything at all, to stop the spread of COVID. You didn’t actually need to Lysol your mail and groceries!
