B.C.'s ombudsperson says the Ministry of Children and Family Development should be embarrassed by its neglect toward reducing the practice of isolating youth in custody.

Ombudsperson Jay Chalke arrives to speak to media during a press conference in Victoria, B.C., on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Chalke says the Ministry of Children and Family Development's "neglect" of fixing serious issues with the practice of isolating youth in provincial correctional facilities is an "embarrassment." He says the ministry has made no progress on 15 of his recommendations, despite a “commitment to implement every recommendation” when the 2021 report was released.‘Our children have an inherent right to know who they are’: Sts’ailes former chief on new legislation in MCFDWhat is a halal mortgage? “I am calling on the ministry to account for and address its delay in meaningfully implementing the recommendations, in order to ensure more humane treatment of youth remanded while awaiting trial or serving a custodial sentence.”He said that in 2021, the ministry had committed to a longer implementation period for the recommendations than the report suggested.

Chalke said the ministry “has so neglected this issue, they’ve been unable to meet even their slower pace of implementation. This should be cause for embarrassment.”Wrong remains sent to ‘exhausted’ Canadian family after death on Cuba vacationBusiness News: Impact of capital gains tax changes
