A young boy who decided to get behind the wheel of a car and go for a drive on Tuesday led the Sûreté du Québec and Outaouais-area police on a low-speed chase that ended only after the SQ deployed a spike strip across the road to halt the vehicle.
At about 4 p.m., police were notified that the boy — whom they would only describe as being younger than 12 — had been seen driving in the area of Gracefield on Highway 105. He was later seen near the town of Low by officers of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police force. They proceeded to give chase and were joined by the SQ, although the pursuit was carried out at the same low speed at which the driver was travelling.
The car, which the SQ said did not belong to the child’s family, was finally brought to a stop about 50 kilometres from its starting point after provincial police laid down a spike strip across Highway 5 near Wakefield. Police said there were no injuries or damages sustained during the incident and that the boy will not face any charges because of his age, but they added that youth protection authorities have been notified of the incident.
