Here are today\u0027s Ottawa Sun letters to the editor.

This week, the Emergencies Act inquiry turned into one of protecting Trudeau. Testifying were his most trusted inner circle and key ministers all supporting his decision to give police extraordinary powers, suspend freedoms and seize bank accounts by invoking the act.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The party faithful, bureaucrats and politicians, are all falling into line with their well-rehearsed reminiscences about why the Emergencies Act was necessary to protect us from their incompetence. Because they were scared feces-less. And there will be a next time. This rights evisceration worked so well it must be repeated. The leaders some of us voted for will make it so. Doug Ford is taking notes. It’s the middle of November. We still have to get through December, January, February and March. That’s four-and-a-half months.

Poor LARRY COMEAU... still doesn't understand that if his buddies, the CONvoy terrorists, had not occupied the city, and terrorized the residents for 22 days... the EA would NOT have used. SHAME ON LARRY COMEAU!

Trudeau might actually be having a successful tour abroad, for oncePrime Minister Justin Trudeau has a bad habit of sticking his foot in his mouth when travelling abroad. There was the infamous India trip, the thought of which likely still makes many PMO staffers cringe. More recently, Trudeau took heat for belting out Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in a hotel lobby while visiting London for the Queen’s funeral. There are almost always domestic media reports about the cost of every trip he makes, which, in a time of economic duress, hit a little harder. (What he spends on a few nights in some hotel rooms amounts to more than some people’s rent.) Most people understand that international travel is a necessary part of the government’s job, but from a political perspective, it is difficult to get it to play well in the domestic arena. Plus, it’s much easier for the opposition to score on an empty net. However, Trudeau’s confrontation with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Bali last week offered up, on a platter, a chance for Trudeau to score some domestic points. When Xi tried to tell Trudeau off for the topics of their prior meeting having been “leaked” to the press, Trudeau cut him off, stepped towards him, and rebutted: “We believe in free and open and frank dialogue, and that is what we will continue to have. We will continue to look to work constructively together, but there will be things we will disagree on, and we will have to…” It was Xi’s turn to interrupt, and he said, curtly via translator, “Let’s create the conditions first.” The two leaders shook hands before Trudeau abruptly walked away. The moment probably won’t make a huge difference in terms of swaying any voters. But in an international arena that is apparently full of potential blunders for the prime minister, this can be considered a rare win. He appeared to stand up for Canadian values (“we believe”) against a state known for its propaganda, its control of information, and as we now know, its interference in Canadian elections. Trudeau is always better when captured in

Reaction to Trudeau-Xi exchange shows partisanship trumps all, even our national interestOTTAWA—The responses to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s high-handed outburst toward Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G20 summit say it all about politics in 2022. Rather than see it for what it really was—a bullying complaint from Xi about letting the world know what the two men discussed in a brief meeting earlier at the summit—right-wing media, politicians, and commentators couldn’t resist the opportunity to portray Canada’s leader as weak and chastened. Britain’s Daily Mail bleated “President Xi humiliates” Trudeau, whom the paper described as “increasingly awkward-looking” as he withstood the rant caught on video. According to the Washington Times, Canada’s prime minister was “dressed down” by his Chinese counterpart. Canadian media couldn’t seem to cope with the unusual pyrotechnics. CTV News, for instance, quoted a former Canadian ambassador to China saying it shows Xi views Canada and Trudeau as small-time and unimportant. Then it had a think-tank executive saying it all demonstrated the Chinese leader’s disrespect for the prime minister. Conservatives echoed Xi’s meaningless allegation that Trudeau had “leaked” details about the two men’s discussion, and former Conservative MP Bob Saroya tweeted, “Politics aside it is tough to see the PM run backstage after getting publicly humiliated by President Xi.” The readiness to take the side of a dictator in a dispute with Canada’s prime minister is an indication of how partisan dislike for Trudeau, the Liberals, and anything progressive has reached the point where it tops everything—even our national interest—in today’s vicious, divisive political climate. These Trudeau critics seem to have forgotten that the Chinese government is seen by many security experts as the most serious threat to the democratic, rules-based global order. Xi is the leader of the autocratic forces working to chip away at western democratic ideas, and probably bears a great deal of responsibility for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It seems
