Wolves apparently freed on purpose, Vancouver zoo says amid ongoing recapture efforts

The Greater Vancouver Zoo issued a statement Tuesday afternoon calling the animals' escape suspicious, and suggesting it was "due to malicious intent."

Zoo officials said most have been recovered, but that a "small number" remained on the loose as of Tuesday afternoon. They suggested the wolves do not pose any danger to the public, but asked anyone who spots one in the area to contact the RCMP and B.C. Conservation Officer Service.After wolves escaped their enclosure Tuesday, people hoping to visit the Greater Vancouver Zoo were turned away at the gates.

"If members of the public identify the wolf, they are encouraged to keep their distance and to report the animal immediately." "Important announcement for all zoo guests. The Greater Vancouver Zoo will remain closed for today," the post said, with a picture of the closed gates.At the zoo, RCMP and conservation officers were seen in a parking lot. By the afternoon, guests were being turned away at the front entrance of the zoo, which was gated.
