The Kitchener Centre race was thrown into turmoil when Raj Saini, who had held the riding for the Liberals since the 2015 election, formally ended his re-election campaign on Sept. 4 following a steady drumbeat of media stories about his alleged harassment of female staff. Saini denies the allegations.
“I’m pretty frustrated about the whole thing myself,” Trudeau told reporters when asked why Saini had been allowed to run in the first place, given the allegations. “Obviously this is a far from ideal situation that we no longer have any candidate in that riding. There’s going to be lots of reflections on what we could, should have done differently.”
Yet the Greens have had a terrible six months. Their leader Annamie Paul has been in a vicious fight with internal detractors, and the party isn’t even fielding a candidate in 86 ridings. Overall, the Green Party has seen its national support cut in half in public polling.Article content
