Oil spills amounting to less than a 10th of an Olympic-sized pool across all of Canada over an entire year? I’d categorize that under ‘good news’

If you don’t feel you have enough email, you can sign up for Statistics Canada’s daily feed of statistics, called, not surprisingly, “The Daily.” I get it out of a sense of duty though that doesn’t mean it isn’t sometimes very interesting. My favourite entry is “Crushing statistics,” which gets updates every so often. Some of StatsCan’s statistics really are crushing, but in this case it’s referring to the business of crushing, which has been a going concern for some time.

Incidents are broken down by whether they occur on the road, in a facility or by air, rail or marine. Roads and facilities caused most of the trouble. And November — when everyone outside B.C. is just getting used to black ice again? — was the worst month. At least it was in 2018. These are 2018 data. 2019 presumably comes out this time next year. There were 464 incidents in 2018, more than one a day.

The internet has a bad press these days but it’s still a wonderful thing for finding out facts, many of them true. Type in “how many litres in a swimming pool?” and Google gives you 3.38 million answers — not all of them right, presumably, though I didn’t check. The first I got went as follows: pool length, 25 metres; pool width, 10 metres, pool depth, one to two metres, average 1.5. So the pool’s volume is 25 x 10 x 1.5=375 cubic metres. How many litres in a cubic metre? 1,000.

Allegations against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou not fraud in Canada: defenceA lawyer for Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou says she should not be extradited to the United States to face fraud charges because her alleged misconduct doesn't amount to fraud in Canada. Huawei lobbied two Liberal MPs and a cabinet official from the Privy Council Office on three different occasions in December. Trudope will give her 10 million even if she is guilty ... Was fraud elsewhere! Americans pressed charges and she landed in Canada where there are extradition laws! At least that is how I understand it.
