Here's why there’s no need to fear the death card in tarot

Aside from the Devil, death is probably the most frightening and dreaded card in a tarot deck. So before we proceed, let’s set straight the common misconception that this card represents a literal death. In all my years as a tarot reader, this card has never reflected an actual passing away of a person.

Some modern decks prefer to soften the blow of this message by focusing on the positive aspect of endings. Instead of addressing the closing of a chapter, they’ll focus on the rebirth that can come after death. Even though I love the story of the phoenix rising from its own ashes, I think this adjustment of perspectives does a great disservice to this card. To focus on the positive is to miss the point of the death card’s lesson.

Furthermore, this card teaches us about the role of mourning. The reason why practically every culture has a form of funeral service is because mourning is a vital process of healing. In mourning, we can recall the good and bad times and then put together an emotional scrap book to take with us on future adventures. We also give ourselves the opportunity to learn from this experience before moving on to the next.

It’s hard to say goodbye to the people and things that we’ve given the best of ourselves to. Whether it’s a relationship that we thought would last forever or a job we sacrificed so much of our time for, admitting that the effort we put in didn’t produce the results we wanted is heartbreaking. We may feel betrayed and cheated or we may even feel stupid for misplacing our hopes.
