First, a quick — but necessary — disclaimer: As of right now, Process Nerd is not privy to any inside information or intel indicating that the government is seriously — or even idly — considering recalling the House of Commons to legislate an end to the ongoing strike by more than 7,000 B.C. port workers, who walked off the job on July 1.
The ongoing standoff at some of Canada’s busiest ports does, however, provide a useful reminder of why no one should be terribly surprised that the mid-June parliamentary reboot predicted by some political observers failed to materialize. As it stands, if the federal government did want to intervene in the ongoing dispute, MPs could be summoned back to Ottawa to deal with the issue within days — as the standing orders make clear, all it would take would be a written request to the speaker, who, if “satisfied that the public interest would be served” by powering the House of Commons back up ahead of its scheduled mid-September return, could reopen the chamber on as little as 48 hours notice.
