Jen Gerson: The feds' new advice was one in a series of backtracks, and public trust is the ballgame here.

“Duck and cover” has a modern analogy in our current state of crisis; theby our public health authorities is not to duck, but rather to cover our faces with masks to reduce the spread of SARs-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

On this last point, there was no controversy. Medical grade masks must go to doctors, nurses, and other health-care workers first. There is both a practical and moral obligation to prioritize the health of the people who are most at risk, and most crucial to fighting the disease. No one can say with certainty just how effective mask wearing might be— and it’s very probable that the practice is only marginally better than wearing nothing. But when we’re dealing with exponential growth, even marginal effects can save hundreds, or thousands of lives.

Your premise is poppycock.

And ofc masks if handled improperly become a viral vector which increases your likelihood of infection. It is extremely likely that many have fallen victim to this jengerson. Maybe the doctors aren't dumber than you after all.

Everyone try to remember. The argument over efficacy of masks was in regards to how much we touch our faces. That was the hang up for recommendations. To anyone saying they did an about face? Well evidence is always changing. Move with it or move out of the way.

There was NO backtrack on the wearing of masks...

acoyne The feds are losing what little credibility the more the info comes out. In almost everything we have done they were at least 3 to 4 weeks too late. The border issue was the worst and that,s on Trudeau. It wasn't about the science, it was about image

Hindsight is 20/20. I'd be more pissed if the govt didn't change with new information. That said, the fake pissed-off people were going to be pissed regardless of the outcome. It's just who they are. **The govt never said you CAN'T wear a mask.** Jeez people.

It's not an about-face. It is an added measure based on a evolving epidemic. Stop trying to manufacture outrage at the expense of health professionals and the public they are trying to serve.

acoyne Or, and hear me out here, the information surrounding the novel virus changes and shifts, reasonably meaning evolving recommendations.

acoyne Game over

acoyne Especially since, if you can't make your own, there's no where or way to acquire any given retail and other lockdowns.

acoyne You can call it an about face or you can call it evolving. If your concern is trust than evolving would be a much better and more helpful framework. This is not helpful.

It’s easy to critique once you have hindsight hey Maclean’s! Why can’t you report something positive for a change?

WearAMask

Or, and stay with me Maclean’s because this requires you to think, they are reacting to an ever changing landscape and are trying to do the best they can for Canadians.
