The CBC news bureau in Moscow, pictured March 2020, had been inside the historic Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building on the banks of the Moscow River.
On Wednesday, Russian officials confirmed that CBC's Moscow bureau would be closed and the network's journalists expelled in response to Ottawa's move to ban broadcasting by the Russian channels, RT and RT France. RT was formerly called Russia Today before a rebranding.
Maria Repnikova, an associate professor in global communication at Georgia State University, said part of Moscow's decision to eject the CBC could be its genuine belief that media outlets always serve the interests of the state, including in Canada.Western reporting, whether it's Canadian or U.S. media, "doesn't seem to serve any utility for Putin and the Russian government," she said.
Russia closed the Moscow bureau of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle in February after Germany blocked RT's broadcasts. But Moscow has yet to retaliate against the EU as a whole after it banned RT and Sputnik, another Russian state-backed outlet, back in March.
"I don't think this has something to do with [CBC] journalists who work in Moscow," said the writer, who is also a senior fellow at the USC Annenberg Center on Communication in Los Angeles. "It is a political message sent to Ottawa about RussiaA placard against Russian broadcaster RT is displayed at a protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine in Toronto on Feb. 27.

So then it's like Canada. Okay.
Big deal. No matter what Pres Putin tries to do, he cannot keep truth out of Russia-he cannot get rid of all cell phones! And most of his supporters will lie to him because what he is doing is beastly & criminal. His behaviour is no different from Taliban! It's all about Control!
Why aren't you reporting on how we're being censored right here in Canada?
CBC gets called out for what it really is!
Indie journalists had to tell us about Canada training the Azovs, Kiev bombing their own civilians for 8 years, the Odessa massacre, Zelensky's banning of the opposition and medias, etc., while CBC serves us 'Ghost of Kiev', 'Snake Island', 'the Mariupol maternity' fictions.
Communism
We need Journalism to keep Informed, know truth, facts, Journalists need World Protection Rights regardless
Wish they would close the one in Canada or get unbiased non-political pushing reporters that can report without influence… otherwise it is what they say Putin is trying to do.. represent the side they want the people to hear
CBC was spreading disinfo
Something about pots and kettles
Sounds pretty familiar - bill C-10 anyone
No shit
Considering the lies, censoring and misinformation the CBC pushes in Canada, it is certainly ballsy of the CBC and friends to act like they don't do the same shit in Canada. Over the last 2 years the CBC has proven to be a mouth piece for our garbage government.
Just like all go ya do. Especially western ones
🤣 but the constant investment in CBC, CTV and Global by Trudeau is not? Idiots! Trudeau and Putin one and the same!
Sure that’s all the CBC ever reports, what the government wants to hear.Good fit I’d say
Canada banned RT 4 weeks prior.
sad 😢🥲
Says Canada's own Pravda....
What was happening with RT in Shaw package?
So Putin doesn't pay as much to CBC as Trudeau...punt
The Russians can't handle the truth. They never hear it with all the bullshit there fed every day. God help them.
Too bad they could not close the CBC in Canada
How before BBCWorld is kicked out as well BBCSteveR?
Wow. Sounds like a play out of JustinTrudeau 's playbook.
They won’t be missing much
Didn’t our government do that for RT?
Didn't Western nations stop the spread of Russian news sources so that we only got side of the story? So it bad when Russia does it, and it's good when you do it? Okay there bud
How dare they copy the strategy of the west.
They are a communist country - that’s what they do. We have to make sure that type of thing doesn’t happen in Canada 🇨🇦
“broader effort to control information, to ensure that Russians only hear the views of the government,' You mean something the legacy media does now
Exactly what Justin Trudeau is trying to do here in Canada!
Putin tossed out an extension of the Trudeau PMO, to be expected.
Sounds like the Chinada I'm currently living in!
Pathetic cbc
Isn’t that why Trudeau pays the media to tell us what he wants told
We're did I hear about something similar? Hmmm bill c-11 and bill c-18
Following North Korea tactics
Why are you acting so surprised? Everyone with a functioning brain knows that the CBC. IS A LIBERAL GOVERNMENT PROPAGANDA OUTLET.
In just three months, Russia has already suffered half the number of combat deaths that the U.S. did in ten years of Vietnam. Putin faces a Sixties-style revolution and he needs to suppress any coverage of it.
You want to keep the CBC open in russia? Havent the people been though enough
Now we should close canadas office too !!!
Yeah, what kind of authoritarian country would do a thing like that?
Sounds like a Trudeau move 🤡
Weird, they seem to be following the same precedence set by the Canadian Government in terms of opposing media outlets...
We need to pay out of pocket for all out of work government subsidized creators of propaganda. They are the real victims here.
Putin wants to control all information, even tweets like these, CNN, BBC, and all media info from democracies. He does not want a free thinking society. In Russia they are likely cyber checking their own people with consequences.
In Canada it’s part of Trudeaus effort to ensure Canadians only hear the views of his Liberal Government.
The irony dripping from the proverbial pen
Tit for tat, as simple as that!
CBC coverage of Ukraine has been so shamelessly partisan it is unwatchable. This is pure projection.
Wonder who else try’s to control information 🧐🧐🧐🧐⏳🤫
Hard to know what to believe..
Yes because as well know, Canadian, American and European mainstream media don't receive talking points from their governments.
What kind of craziness is this! Putin must hear the CBC. Gather the intel we broadcast to our public. Why.
Wow. Amazing resemblance to CBC s role in Canada on behalf of Trudeau and his government.
I mean we did close down Russian channels. Why are we surprised at them retaliating?
Should be worn like a badge of honour.
Maybe you shouldn’t have kept calling it so one sided. Putin is horrid - a detriment to Russian people. But the slant in reporting is just atrocious. That wasn’t transparency you were delivering - it was western propaganda.
Quelle surprise!
Very funny as Canada did the same previously 🤷🏾♂️
