There are several renewable energy projects proposed in different parts of Nunavut, but the territory is a reminder of how much of a challenge the country faces in decarbonizing remote communities.

Despite advancements in the performance and cost of renewable energy and battery storage technology, Nippard is firm in his intent to stick with diesel and continues to have reservations about wind and solar.

That’s why he says everyone — from residents and private industry to governments and public officials — must be aligned on reducing reliance on diesel. His report describes how local renewable energy sources are a critical need, in part because the area is already experiencing more severe effects of climate change than the rest of the planet, and transporting diesel through Arctic channels is becoming more unpredictable and dangerous.

Remote communities could look to Iceland for inspiration. The country was completely dependent on importing fossil fuels in the 1970s, but now relies almost exclusively on geothermal energy. He’s the vice-president of northern development and Indigenous relations with ATCO Electric, which built the project and buys the electricity. He’s also a member of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council in Whitehorse.

There was a time when I didn’t believe 25 per cent [renewables] was going to happen. So yes, I do believe at some point 100 per cent is going to be able to happen from renewables. For now, renewables can help reduce diesel use, he says, and maybe one day they will allow communities to shut off their diesel power plants entirely.

The federal government’s emissions reductions plan describes diesel power plants as expensive to maintain, while also producing health, environment and economic concerns. Still, there is a need for the federal government to be much more aggressive in reducing the reliance on diesel to produce electricity, said Ernie Daniels, president of the First Nations Finance Authority.

Not a single watt produced 3 years later 🤣

They like showing the solar panels...never show all the batteries being used, then discarded every 5 years

what genius came up with that plan? i’ll bet co2 emissions from that fiasco is greater than burning peat.

They are not 'hooked' on diesel they rely on it there is a difference.

LOL CBC … the reality is without oil or gas they will just revert to whale and seal blubber to heat their homes, just like the good old days eh, solar and wind, LOL LOL But serious endeavours need real solutions and your propaganda is destroying Canada

Decarbonize Deez nutz ya friggin' nerds.

F off with your decarbonizing. Carbon is needed for the planet to survive. Now take a look at rockets and jets . How many rockets go up and poke holes through the stratosphere? Jets release more chemicals than the busiest highway in Canada

Well with solar panels they will have power for about 5 months.

If you think green energy is expensive in southern Ontario, wait to you get the bill for it in Nunavut. We have green energy zealots in office with no care about what makes sense or the costs.

1) Put small nukes in where it makes sense (eg community size, industry). 2) Half of these map pins are coastal, mountains, rainfall. Put in Pelton wheels. 3) Move on. The remaining impact is miniscule.

An exercise in failure

They just need to believe.

Won't ever happen.

Nothing better than setting up solar panels in a place that has complete darkness for 3 months trudeaulied trudeauliedunderoath neverndp

The north is not going to decarbonise. In fact, it's going to have an existential challenge as net energy declines rapidly over the next couple of decades. The focus on CO₂ is distracting from the real issue of energy use.

Hopefully we learned something from the Cold War days of the Dew Line.

wat ever happened to Nicola Tecla's 32 pierce Arrow which run on longitudinal energy

Rich people buy used cars because a new car is the worst possible investment you can make.

Why there's excitement and skepticism about new Alzheimer's drug lecanemab | CBC NewsSecondOpinion: Despite decades of research and billions of dollars, no treatment has ever definitively proven to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Two pharmaceutical companies have developed a drug that they say does just that. Avoid aluminum and you will be fine Oh really? What happened to 'the pill' that cured cancer you reported on years back? None of these life changing medical breakthroughs are ever going to make it to the little people. There are too many of us, and they want us all dead. DepopulationAgenda Wasn't all Alzheimer's research essentially moot because it was all based on a paper that turned out to be fraudulent?
