Scott Gilmore: The UN Security Council seat loss is more proof that when a real geopolitical crisis finally comes, we have no foreign policy muscle to save us

Justin Trudeau speaks during a Girl Education event at UN headquarters during the General Assembly of theUN in New York on Sept. 25, 2018

Our loss in New York is not the fault of the Canadian diplomats who have been working for the last five years trying to secure the votes we needed today. The current team is one of the best, and they played the hand they were dealt as well as they could. And it was a lousy hand. Our politicians are possibly the weakest link in the chain. They are never elected on the merits of their foreign policy ideas, and as a result never prioritize when in office. When they do think about it, they often confuse invitations to Davos and vacations in Tuscany as evidence they are worldly. They prioritize slogans and costumed photo-ops over the grueling legwork and devil’s bargains that real diplomatic strategy requires.

All of this was true under the previous government, and the government before them, going back decades. It has been pointed out endlessly. Hands have even been wrung. But nothing changes. Because ultimately none of us genuinely cares enough to do anything about it.

Scott_Gilmore Our diplomats have completely ignored common people. Why should politicians care of voters don't care since there is nothing to care about?

Pardon? Trudeau has social license, or so he claimed. And cool socks.

Yep. Couldnt agree more

markusoff When you run on renewing peace keeping and refuse to renew your limited peace keeping role in Mali yeah people notice.

Which is why it’s more important than ever not to piss off our big brother to the south.

This is why Canada has to switch to an internal economy. Forget outside interference and influence.

Parliamentary Black Caucus calls for government action against systemic racism in CanadaThe Parliamentary Black Caucus says non-Blacks are only now realizing the scope of racism in Canada, and the group is proposing a series of measures to cut down on what they call a ‘pernicious and widespread phenomenon’ Worth noting: 'All that has changed (the day Trump was sworn into office) is the official narrative (to 'racism'). And it will change back as soon as Trump is gone and the ruling classes have no further use for it.' C.J. Hopkins … Are they also calling for recognition of the fact Canada saved 40,000 blacks from SLAVERY in the US through the Underground Railway...or have we forgotten that...not to mention that we don’t have systematic racism now in Canada...multicultural policies exist to ensure that... Lets face the reality; there is NO systemic racism, for there are no laws to implement racism in the sytem. WHAT WE DO HAVE; enough racists in the sytem to infect the sytem with racism, so it looks like it is racist system. Those racists must go, first. Then must not be hired
