Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne likened attracting foreign grocers to Canada to efforts to bring in electric vehicle investment with the need for personal outreach.

WATCH: Following the federal government’s announcement of a $15-billion Honda electric vehicle plant in Ontario, ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson asks Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne for a follow-up to his government’s efforts to increase grocery store competition. Minister Champagne discusses his talks with foreign grocery chains, as well as Canada ’s electric vehicle infrastructure.

“I met one of them in the United States, and the biggest hurdle they had was about leases. They could not find 400 or 500 leases or properties to lease in the country despite them being very big, billions of dollars,” Champagne said.8 in 10 Canadian households seeing grocery bill increases: IPSOS poll

“It’s sending a signal to the world that we have the best workers in the world, that the place to invest is in Canada, because now we have the full supply chain when it comes to batteries and electric vehicles. Honestly, today is really a game-changer. It’s kind of historic,” Champagne said.
