Fergus, the MP of Hull-Aylmer since 2015, now has the difficult task to restore some order in a hyper partisan House. He has already announced that the Speaker’s office will be issuing some “reflective guidelines” later this month on what MPs can or cannot mention in the House.
Before the Second World War, Fergus’ grandfather swapped identities with his older brother in order to join the Royal Air Force and leave the British protectorate of Montserrat, in the Caribbean. He eventually immigrated to Montreal to provide a better life for his family., Fergus revealed that his grandfather never disclosed this to his own family, which only found out his real identity after his death in 1981.
After having worked in the public and private sectors, he ran for office in 2015 in Hull-Aylmer and won against the NDP’s Nycole Turmel. Fergus made an emotional speech at the start of Black History Month in 2022, which coincided with the Freedom Convoy, to condemn the small minority of protesters around Parliament Hill who displayed Confederate flags to protest against federal vaccine mandates.
