Loss against Real Salt Lake in home\u002Dopener is behind them, but Caps hope another strong performance can help them secure rare away result.

On Saturday night, while Schuster well may have had to trudge home to the Olympic Village in the sleet, he was warmed by the reaction he got from those fans who did show for the game.

But now their eyes are firmly set on Saturday’s road game in San Jose and the positives they took from a loss that had some of the demons that haunted them last year — poor defending on set pieces and organizational breakdowns after being put on their back heels by other open-field defensive miscues.

But the style of play on display last Saturday was all that had been promised since the first days of the Marc Dos Santos era, when a high-intensity, high pressure, esthetically pleasing brand of football was declared to be their new hallmark, but never materialized. Even in the years before that, Carl Robinson was a defensive-minded coach who relied heavily on absorbing pressure and stealing points through timely set pieces.

“We certainly don’t want to say, ‘OK, complete flip switch,’ revert back to some other ways. No. We want to play the same way and we want to establish ourselves on the field and be dominant and in all four phases like we were last week for a good amount.” And Gressel thinks the team is capable of being a possession-based team on the road, depending on the opponent, to allow them to dictate the game’s pace.
