A Whitby man is making waves as he becomes the first man with disabilities to cross the five Great Lakes on a paddleboard.

Mike Shoreman has already done Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Erie and will cross Lake Michigan Tuesday. “I’m doing it to challenge myself and to challenge the stereotypes of persons with disabilities from Canadians across the country,” Shoreman said. Shoreman has Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a shingles variant, which attacked his ear and paralyzed and collapsed the right side of his face. It left him with mobility, vision, speech, taste and hearing problems. Now he’s decided to cross the Great Lakes to also raise money for youth mental health.

“I’m… doing it to raise funds to put mental health programs in schools for youth, young people in our community and every province and territory across the country,” added Shoreman.Shoreman is scheduled to cross Lake Ontario in mid-August with the date depending on the weather.Ctrl+Enter
