But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Before he was slammed around by the Panthers’ Sam Bennett, forcing him to the sideline, Knies demonstrated he has the potential to become a front-line impact player in the National Hockey League. We get it, it was an awfully small sample size, but there was no denying Knies’ strength and smarts in the 10 games he did play in, regular season and playoffs combined.
Now, Knies has an off-season to prepare for what will be a crucial training camp. Provided he remains in good health, Knies, who turns 21 in October, should be in line for a top-six job. Lafferty’s grit is great for the bottom six. He has one year left before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Two forwards under contract who will provide camp intrigue are Nick Robertson and Pontus Holmberg. Robertson’s goal will be two-fold — to make waves following a recovery from shoulder surgery in January and to remain healthy. Holmberg is a restricted free agent, but we’d expect him to sign and build off the defensive instincts he nicely put to use in the 37 games he played with the Leafs.
