Remember that time you ran out of beer and drove to buy more while you were nearly four times over the legal blood alcohol limit?Last August, employees at a Sudbury Beer Store refused to serve a customer they deemed intoxicated. He proceeded to get back in his car and leave. They immediately called Greater Sudbury police, who located the Nissan Altima along with a red-eyed driver surrounded by empty beer cans who was too inebriated to get the door open.
RELATED Because it’s beer o’clock somewhere! Suspended driver stopped in Ontario on beer run — with 58 cases “[He]then failed a roadside breath test. On the trip to police headquarters for further breath testing, [he] told the officers he “figured this would happen as he drank too much.” How much? His subsequent BAC readings were .351, .312. and .306. You are legally impaired at .08.
Because this was the driver’s third conviction for impaired , he earned himself a 90-day jail sentence. However, he’s allowed to serve it on weekends so he doesn’t lose his job, but due to COVID restrictions, jails aren’t taking weekend visitors at this time. The driver is acting as his own lawyer, and agreed to waive his right to a faster sentencing, as the courts put off the matter until June. If restrictions have eased, he can start serving his time.
Dude has been nothing but agreeable, which really forces the next questions: he’s been convicted 3 times in 15 years, he admits he has a drinking problem, weekends in jail is likely to do nothing to solve that, and yet, a repeat offender is cruising around our province unless he gets caught or reported?
Three strikes should be a driver’s licence gone for good, no matter how easy there are to get along with.
