The players
In both situations he was handed excellent teams. In Detroit he was given a team full of veteran future HOFers. In Toronto he was given a bunch of superstar kids. In both scenarios he didn't relate to players. In detroit he didn't have to, they just went out and played.
Detroit had defence...
Grit and maturity in the lineup
The plague which is Toronto
The difference is the way the game is played then vs now. His old school hockey style is very beatable today and even with all the talent in the world he couldn't make it work anymore because the game has evolved and he hasn't. Love Babs but we need some new ideas.
50 million
Nick lidstrom
Nik Lidstrom
Toronto
T.O.
He had a better TEAM in Detroit.
40mill
The Europeans buy into his style more then the North Americans.
Boston
Personnel
30 million $$$$$$$
Talent. FuckTheLeafs
A Stanley cup!!
The difference is useful ownership and talented players. The public supports these owners by buying Leaf merchandise and supporting Leaf sponsors.
HE HAD STRUCTURED EXPERIENCED DEFENSEMEN!
A quality team?
Are you guy ever stupid to ask that question , he never had the team in Toronto has he did in Detroit. Defense being the biggest thing , along with ken holland
Hockeytown/Hogtown, Winners/Losers
The players weren’t little spoiled brats, and could handle being coached
Stanley Cup?
Detroit; Veteran truly proven great players that would have won if I was the coach, Toronto; was left with a nerd as a GM who thinks algorithms and excel spreadsheets is how to you win.
Shitty GM in Toronto!!
Rosters
Toronto...
That's because the Toronto sports market's full of douchebags and Detroit wasn't. The laughs can change their coaching staff all they want. They'll still get the same old result. Losers.
No difference. Both couldn't generate a Stanley Cup.
He had real talent in detroit that actually played & earned their contracts unlike overpaid useless kids
Players who had heart. A good blend of vets and fewer rookies. Leadership in the dressing room .... JT was never asked to be a leader in NY. Heck making the playoffs was a check mark for success. Mariner is the true captain and unfortunately he’s injuried.
Absolutely nothing....both versions sucked
wings were a balanced team, had great offence and defense, ok in net. Leafs good offense, weak D, better than average goalie
Nothing.....that’s the problem.
Wings had Lidstrom, Leafs don't! For starters. lol
Players that played with heart and not just the all mighty dollar$$$$. Unproven primadonnas is all they are. Scapegoat coach.
Detroit Babcock - had players who would respect their Head coach's opinion definitely. Toronto Maple Leafs - have players that are whiny and stump their feet against Babcock. Let a lone a whiny GM Kelly.
Lacklustre management. Inexperienced management
A group of overpaid brats vs a team that would do anything it took to win.
The SalaryCap era...simply...
Didn’t have to coach Vets.
Ken Holland
Different Cities
Talented players. Detroit had tons in all faucets of the game. Leafs have playmakers. Nothing more.
💰
5 years.
if it were touch hockey, the Leafs would be an elite team. The biggest difference, Ken Holland was a hockey person.
Ken Holland and Kyle Dubas
1. Players... 2. Stanley Cup
He inherited a great team in Detroit. And coached them to years of mediocrity. He coached a stacked Olympic team. He hasnt built a team yet...
No sandpaper
About 5 or 6 hall of famers
Ken Holland and Lou Lamourello good GMs. Dubas - unproven. Coaches need a full tool kit. Hammers, nails, screws, the more tools the better equipped. Toronto has a lot of the same tools. The way Dubas wants them to play is a recipe for disaster. Babcock could only do so much 👋
Stacked team
He had defensive talent
In Detroit he had a hall of Fame Dman to run out 30 minutes a game. Toronto has no one that can even hold Lidstrom’s jock
Professionalism and not a bunch of over paid kids!
It was an integrated management and coaching experience..he came on board with an organization in a Golden era of Cup triumphs. The glass was full..he maintained the status quo.
1967
Babcock inherited a highly talented Detroit team with multiple Hall of Famers on it Scotty Bowman did all the work there Babcock just reaped the benefits and won the cup with all those players in Toronto he had to figure it out on his own and obviously couldn't and lost the team
Toronto-shittier team Detroit-were lethal back in the day
Detroit won the Stanley Cup .... how many times .....
Detroit had more depth and more veterans, didn't need coaching as desperately. Babcock is overrated. A mediocre coach could have been successful with Team Canada or the 2008 Wings. He was exposed in Toronto.
Veteran players vs millennials
Salary cap and Lindstrom. His team's would have won with likely anyone behind the bench, likely
One was a good team the other was a bad team, maybe mediocre
TSN and Sportsnet pumped him up like the second coming when he came to Toronto . Now you turncoats are gonna kick dirt? Not surprised
His Ego !
Zetterburg and datusyk
Nick Lidstrom. Duh. If not for a historic goalie run by Giguere in 2003 and Lidstrom, Babcock is marginal coach.
The dream team that he had in Detroit, and the gold medal championship. That’s your difference
A GM that knows nothing another season down the tubes
Steve Yzerman! He’s a leader the Leafs are babies.
The new school gm who believes in speedy and soft players
datsyuk, zetterberg and a sane media
Still waiting to hear from bshep17 on this.
The big difference is a big tough hockey team that would go to war with each other and no pampering, and the team showed up every game I can remember 5 yrs ago Mike was going to take this team to the big dance,so Sheldon get your hand over you know what.
Talent
Babcock became exactly what he didn't want his young players to become after they got their big contracts.
Detroit had defence, 2 way forwards. grit, toughness, leadership, good management.... Toronto has none of that with soft overpaid players who are unwilling to play D!
Living in a fishbowl in TO.
The Money 💸💴💵💰
The difference is that the Wings won a cup in spite of him and that roster was capable of a couple more.
Really? Look at the rosters. Players who hated to lose.
He had to listen to a GM, who shouldn't be a GM?
Toronto management that puts Analytics ahead of common sense.
4 lines. In TO after the top six the drop off is dramatic. Detroit also had grit- Draper McCarthy Holmstrom. Heavy, tough team.
A Stanley Cup
A completely different nhl, rules, and a completely different set of skill level on the ice today compaired to the nhl back in the day.
Hope and potential
HOF players
Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Kronwall, Osgood/Hasek.....
Scotty bowman did all the hard work in Detroit and Torrana Babs had to figure it out and didn’t Most overrated coach in hockey history
Sensitive millennials! Austin Matthews is a joke!
Having multiple HOFers and future HOFers in Detroit carry him lol
Nothing. He didn’t change anything.
The players, for one
A team that knew how to win.
Nicholas Lindstrom
